The Valentines Couples Retreat (Old Thorns Manor)

A few days ago, I surprised my boyfriend with an overnight pod spa break for his birthday at the Old Thorns Country manor hotel. It exceeded expectations in every way and would truly be the perfect valentines day gift for a luxurious relaxing break away.

As we live and go to uni in the centre of Southampton, we literally live our lives within a tiny 1 mile radius, everything we have and need is so close and as it's so built up it can all get a bit claustrophobic. Uni work is so full on at the moment for both of us too, so a get away was much needed. For Sean's birthday I was on the lookout for somewhere to take him away from the city and somewhere that was a little bit different.

A hotel room seemed a bit of an obvious choice, and that's when I came across the Old Thorns manor hotel and country estate's pod spa breaks. Their luxury eco pods are right next to the hotel, so you can use all of the hotels spa and dining amenities, yet have the novelty of staying in a pod. It's located in Liphook, Hampshire so is about a 50 minute drive from here, but with the huge contrast it feels as though you're a million miles away from the city. Set in the beautiful countryside and surrounded by its own golf course, it's such a peaceful and tranquil setting.

Upon arrival, we were given keys to pod number 3 and it was ready for us straight away because it wasn't occupied the previous night. Although they look small from the outside, they're in fact quite spacious inside (the photographs make it appear smaller than it felt) and contains absolutely everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Comfy double bed ࿁ Dresser ࿁ Mirrors ࿁ Lighting and electrical sockets ࿁ Heater (the pod was already warmed up upon arrival) ࿁ Dressing table ࿁ Flat screen Tv ࿁ Sofa bed (you can sleep up to four per pod, 2 adults, 2 children) ࿁ Hairdryer  Iron and ironing board  Tea and coffee facilities ࿁ Towels ࿁  Use of robes and slippers from the Spa ࿁ Toilets & showers (located just across the pebble path, luxury heated cabins)

The Old Thorns offer a variety of different packages, so there's something to suit everyone whether you're on the lookout for a golfing break or a relaxing spa break. I opted for the 'ultimate spa pod break' (see here) which included full use of the spa facilities and relaxation room, a half an hour treatment of your choice (we both had back massages which I highly recommend), a two course dinner and breakfast for the following day. The dinner was a carvery roast dinner with all the trimmings and for dessert there was a large variety to choose from with a cute 'add your own sweets' option. Breakfast was also 'help yourself', and you could have anything from cereal, to a cooked breakfast to a continental breakfast (I couldn't pick so had a huge amazing mixture, see photos below). There's also a Starbucks and sports bar on site for any snacks or lunch needed throughout your stay.

At £75 per person, for what we got and quality of the pod, spa, treatment and food we think it's absolutely amazing value for money.

We used the wellness suite for the entire day, as well as the pool and sub tropical pool (a lot of fun) and also had the option to use the gym and spa facilities. The hotel and spa facilities are only open to members and guests staying overnight, so it wasn't crowded in the slightest and was so peaceful. In particular, the wellness suite which is only open to 18+ and provides an all rounded relaxing spa experience to use as you wish.

The relaxation room is exclusive to those who have booked or have spa treatments included in their packages. It's such a beautiful room, with these beds dotted around, dimmed lighting, scented aroma and calming music playing from the plasma screen showing scenes of natural beauty from around the world. It really does make you forget all of life's day to day stresses, and provides you with the ultimate tranquil experience.

I found myself taking plenty of photos, everywhere I looked there was something interesting and eye-catching and the decor was so beautiful and luxurious.

As well as the pod, hotel, spa and grounds being absolutely beautiful, the staff couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful and they made us feel completely relaxed giving us that 'VIP experience'. We couldn't recommend The Old Thorns enough and had such a fun and romantic time- it's the perfect couples retreat.

You can view the Old Thorns manor hotel and gold country estate's full website here, and they have a friendly welcoming booking line allowing you to create the perfect package for your stay.

Make this Valentines day memorable

    1. I'd say it was as we were able to use all of the facilities from 8am until 10pm, and then again the following morning until noon. But I definitely wouldn't complain if I were to stay longer!x
